REGISTER NOW! - African Perspectives 2009 :: Pretoria / Tshwane

African Perspectives 2009 is seen as an event of practical solutions, to be tabled and to be challenged by expert academics of a broad multidisciplinary background.

Practical solutions mean in the first place design and building, as architecture will be at the core. But, as we have learned from African Perspectives 2007 in Delft, the expression in other art media is helpful to get a foothold on the complicated matter of city building. Another contribution of the multimedia approach is that it assists in bridging the gap between down to earth practice and the academic approach.

BAS SNAPSHOT EXHIBITION 2009 - WITS UNIVERSITY

This exhibition of current student work for the Wits Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree serves as a snapshot of what kinds of knowledge and skills are integrated into the making of an architectural designer. This engaging selection of projects is exemplary of the well-structured build-up of skills across different subjects, and gives a good overview of the course. It is especially relevant to school-leavers considering architecture as a career, since applications for this degree at Wits for 2010 will be closing soon. The BAS degree is the first step to becoming a professional architect, followed by a year of experience in an architects’ office before returning to the School of Architecture for two years of postgraduate study to attain a M.Arch.Prof. The final steps to professional registration are a period of practical experience and passing a professional practice exam.

The annual Green Building Conference will open its exhibition doors to the public on the 7-8th of July 2009. The Conference is aimed at professionals within the built environment, with international leading speakers such as Kam Sing Wong from Hong Kong, Tiffany Tsui from China and Emilio Ambasz from the USA.

Event Co-ordinator and Director, Gordon Brown, believes that the exhibition should be available for the general public to view as 'green' building effect's everyone, including the home-owner. The exhibition will be in a vibrant, interactive environment, where exhibitors will have the ability to interact one on one with the public and delegates attending the conference.

General home and property owners trying to 'green' their home but not sure where to get the materials will be able to come through on the two days and engage with the latest trends, technologies and materials available in the 'green' building movement.

Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam 2009

From Thursday, October 29 to Sunday, November 1, Rotterdam

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) offers four days to enjoy architecture in film. Here are the world's best movies, recent documentaries and most stunning animations that depict the city and architecture in a special way. The screenings will be introduced by filmmakers and designers, debated with experts and the world premieres will be celebrated. The fifth edition of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam takes place from October 29 to November 1.

The 60 films that AFFR screens are rarely or never seen before in the Netherlands. The program is extremely varied - from documentaries to tearjerker, from short to long, from premiere film to cult classic. Stories take place against the spectacular backdrop of a megacity Shanghai, the landscape of Iceland, the always sunny Palm Springs or cities in distress as Havana and Asmara. With new biographies of world famous architects and lesser known creative self builders. But a documentary about the new Vinex neighborhood in the Haarlemmermeer and a portrait of the Rotterdam Kop van Zuid area are also included in the program.
