Invitation to participate in an Exhibition of Contemporary South African Architecture.

sharpCITY is inviting South African Architects to submit projects to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition on South African Architecture at the 6th Sao Paulo International Biennale of Architecture and Design 2005

Background
The Sao Paulo Biennial of Architecture and Design is a regular architectural exhibition, consistently growing in prestige and exposure. Between 300.000 and 500.000 visitors are expected to view the exhibition in two months. The event is gaining critical attention and acclaim in the international architectural press and in academic circles, is supported by public debate forums and workshops catering for members of the public, city planners and administrators, developers and professionals.

Curator
sharpCITY has been appointed and endorsed as curator for this exhibition (see SAIA endorsement). Formalised in 2004 sharpCITY is the result of an ongoing collaboration of a collective of young SA architects. sharpCITY has developed a track record of international publications, lectures and exhibitions on South African architecture and urbanism sharpCITY has previously curated, designed and implemented the exhibition "Johannesburg_Now" at the Sao Paulo Biennal 2003.

Exhibition
The exhibition aims to celebrate architecture of excellence and relevance within the context of the South African landscape.

The South African Architecture exhibition forms part of the national exhibition component which includes Argentina, Austria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Portugal & Singapore. (see link: http://bienalsaopaulo.globo.com).

Venue: Oscar Niemeyer designed exhibition pavilion in the Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo, Brazil.

Space: 90msq to showcase South African architecture

Date: 8th of October - 11th of December 2005.

Exhibition components and book
By curating the first international exhibition on South African Architecture we aim to impact positively on local and international debate regarding architecture. It is for this reason that we wish to use the opportunity of the biennale to produce a quality publication of South African Architecture and a travelling exhibition that can be shown in other cities of the world.

The exhibition initiative comprises the following:

a). Exhibition of 30-40 projects.
b). Commissioned short film ("road movie") on SA landscape and cities
c). A webpage link for the duration of the exhibition.
d). Book on contemporary South African architecture
e). Possibility of travelling exhibition - to SA and internationally
f). Competitive travel package to Sao Paulo

Funding Participation
Currently the South Africa exhibition is unfunded. We are approaching public and corporate sponsors to assist in the realisation of exhibition components. However, we still need support from the participating architects in order to design and implement the exhibition successfully.

We have calculated costs per project exhibited at R10 000. We encourage you to make your clients or other stakeholders involved in the selected project, aware of this opportunity, which could support its inclusion in the exhibition and publication and thereby benefit from the resulting publicity.
