AUTOCAD 2000i TO RETIRE IN DECEMBER 2004
Productivity gains far outweigh the cost of upgrades

Productivity gains achieved following a design software upgrade far outweigh the cost of the upgrade.

That’s the message from Autodesk Africa MD, Errol Ashwell, who recently highlighted productivity increases to be had by users of the company’s general design software, AutoCAD, and specifically users of the AutoCAD 2000i family of software, which is being ‘retired’ at the end of this year.

Ashwell says output increases achieved following upgrades to the most recent release of AutoCAD – AutoCAD 2005 – more than offset the cost of the transition, particularly for AutoCAD 2000i users.

“Productivity increases achieved by using AutoCAD 2005’s new Sheet Set Manager function alone, are significant,” says Ashwell. “The most recent release of AutoCAD saves the user from having to manage huge numbers of drawings, each as a separate file.
“Named sheet selection sets can be defined for each subset (architectural, electrical, mechanical) and one for the entire project. So, when a set of drawings is required for the electrical contractor, for instance, one can simply restores the electrical selection sheet set. If an entire set is required for the building owner, the entire project selection sheet set is restored.

“Sheet Set Manager offers superior benefits when compared with the traditional methods of managing individual drawings as separate files. By utilising it, organisations, large and small, can efficiently and accurately create, compose, collate, update, publish, distribute, archive and manage drawing sets,” says Ashwell.

The AutoCAD 2000i family of software, which includes Autodesk Architectural Desktop R2i and Autodesk Architectural Desktop 3, will be removed from Autodesk’s price list on 15 December 2004.

According to Ashwell, restricting the number of releases that have to be supported by Autodesk enables the company to contain its training and support costs, a saving which Autodesk passes on to its software users.

He encouraged users of the soon-to-be-retired software to contact Amanda Wesson at amanda@worldsview.co.za or 011 805-1555 to explore upgrade paths, to AutoCAD 2005, Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2005 or Autodesk Revit 6, for their software.
