Table Mountain Could Be One Of New Seven Wonders - Vote!

Pretoria - Tourism Minister, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, has urged South Africans to vote in the final round of the New 7 Wonders of Nature contest to ensure that Table Mountain makes it onto the final list of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Table Mountain is on a shortlist of 28 natural sites from around the globe competing to be named one of the official New7Wonders of Nature. The final seven wonders will be determined entirely by votes from the public, with the organisers aiming to attract more than 1 billion voters across the globe.

In an effort to support South Africa's entry in the contest, van Schalkwyk was the first person to use a new sms voting mechanism to vote for Table Mountain's campaign.

Van Schalkwyk said that following on from the massive success of the 2010 World Cup, South Africans can now focus on 2011 and a completely different contest.

"This is a race that aims to preserve the top seven wonders of nature for future generations and which gives South Africa the opportunity to be written into the history books for thousands of years to come," he said.

SACAP Registrar Dorothy Brislin Resigns From Office

It is with sadness that the Architect Africa Collective learns of Dorothy Brislin's resignation as Registrar of the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) to pursue a career in film and architecture.

Under the leadership of SACAP's first Black president, Malcolm Campbell, Ms Brislin was responsible for reshaping the remnants of an apartheid driven mechanism and for turning it into the successful, integrated, representative and independent body that it is today.

The architectural profession in South Africa will always be indebted to Ms Brislin for her admirable efforts and achievements whilst in office.

Whilst the Profession loses a founding figure that will be much missed, African architecture will gain from Ms Brislin's experience and commitment to the all important relationship between film and architecture - we look forward with anticipation to reporting on Ms Brislin's projects in the future.

Invitation To Opening of AZA Pavilion - Johannesburg

The AZA Pavilion is a live, full scale demonstration building on Mary Fitzgerald Square using a range of alternative building materials. The building demonstrates not only light-weight and fully insulated building materials (that can be handled by women), but also demonstrates an alternative approach to the design and construction methods of community-based, integrated housing models.

The Pavilion has been constructed on the Square in 12 days by 4 teams of women and yougsters from Thinasonke Informal Settlement (Alrode South), and will be dismantled after the AZA Event and re-erected as a community centre in Thinasonke. We are working in close collaboration with the Federation of the Urban Poor on this project.

Government Kills Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Project

Pretoria - Government has decided to no longer invest in the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) project, says Public Enterprises Minister Barbara Hogan.

"Without going into too much detail right now, government, after careful deliberation, analysis and review, and mindful of the fiscal constraints in these hard economic times, has had to make a decision to no longer invest in this project," Minister Hogan told the National Assembly on Thursday.

Hogan said the scale and size of the company was now being reduced to a few people with the focus now being on the retention of its intellectual property, and of certain skills, and the preservation of its assets.

She said government's decision had not been taken lightly and that government was mindful of the impact this would have on the future careers and livelihoods of the PBMR employees.

"Nor have we lost sight of the significant investment already made by government in this project and the impressive scientific advances already achieved in pioneering this particular form of nuclear technology," she explained.

Winterveldt Informal Settlement To Be Revamped

Pretoria - Winterveldt informal settlement, north of Pretoria, will get a major facelift over the next six years that will see the neglected community transformed into a sustainable human settlement.

The provincial government plans to address the plight of more than 30 000 households in Winterveldt by delivering at least 32 107 subsidised housing units and approximately 2 200 finance-linked units for middle class families.

Immediate programmes include turning some extensions into formal townships installing services and building houses.

Clinics, schools, old age homes, trauma centres, multi-purpose centres, pension pay points and orphanages will also either be developed or upgraded in the township.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Housing MEC Kgaogelo Lekgoro were in Winterveldt on Thursday to detail the Gauteng Provincial Government's plans for the 68-year-old township.Addressing the thousands of Winterveldt residents, Mokonyane said the time had come for change.

Evictions loom as municipality enforces court order

Komatipoort - The Nkomazi municipality in Mpumalanga will enforce a court interdict to stop people from settling on land given to beneficiaries of a 9 000ha land claim near Komatipoort.

Rival members of the Mjejane Trust in Hectorspruit have allegedly been selling stands on about 405ha of the land, which was successfully claimed in 2007.

According to the municipality's communication manager, Cyril Ripinga, about 10 000 people have bought stands on land that does not have the necessary basic infrastructure for a township.

"We can't have leaders of land claimants giving people land to build houses without the municipality's knowledge. In the end, these people come to the municipality to seek services for which there are no plans or budgets and then we have service delivery protests," said Ripinga.

He said the recipients of the land were also posing a danger to motorists on the N4 because their livestock was roaming freely.

"There is no fencing and we now have goats and cows wandering all over the road," he said.

Some members of the Mjejane Trust claim the land is being sold by its former chairman, Samson Mawelele, and have welcomed the interdict.
