Nigeria: Nigeria Moves Close to Total Darkness

Nigeria: Nigeria Moves Close to Total Darkness - These are certainly not the best of times for Nigeria in terms of electricity generation. Power generation in the country has dropped to its lowest level ever and there are indications that the situation, which has been attributed to acute shortage of gas supply to the nation's power plants, would get worse. The consequences on the nation's economy are better imagined. [AA Urbanisation]

SA World Cup 2010 : Peter Mokaba Stadium ready for handover

By Nthambeleni Gabara

Pretoria - The Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo is ready to be handed over to FIFA, says Premier Cassel Mathale.

Mathale made the announcement during his State of the Province Address on Thursday.

The formal contractual handover was done in November last year and the final handover to the City of Polokwane was on 14 January when the contractor moved out of the site.

The City's 2010 marketing and communications manager, Mantlako Sebaka told BuaNews that as far as their agreement and timeline they are going to officially hand over the stadium to FIFA on 24 May.

Premier Mathale said the people of Limpopo could not contain their joy when the province was included on the list of provinces approved to host some of the matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, adding that the province is ready and fully prepared for the soccer spectacular.

He said all security measures were properly resourced, capacitated and in a state of readiness. The medical and emergency services have been improved in line with the requirements of the tournament.

Housing : Limpopo cracks whip on shoddy contractors

By Nthambeleni Gabara

Pretoria - The Limpopo Government has developed a clear strategy to deal with shoddy jobs done by certain RDP housing contractors.

Delivering his State of the Province Address on Thursday, Premier Cassel Mathale said part of the strategy would be employing new service providers to finish the work within stipulated time lines.

"We have also completed the process of cancelling the contracts of 42 contractors who did shoddy work by building poor quality RDP houses or abandoning the projects.

"We are finalising the next phase of blacklisting them from the central database of government, in order to bar them from providing any service to government and the people of Limpopo," he said.

Mathale said any company providing services to the provincial government will be required to sign a document that allows for the uplifting of the corporate veil of its individual members to allow the government to blacklist and sue the members.

"Our people have been cheated long enough and it is time to take strong action against these unscrupulous contractors responsible for providing poor services to our communities," he said.

Water for 1 million Limpopo households

By Nthambeleni Gabara

Pretoria - The Limpopo Provincial Government is planning to provide more than one million households with water in the 2010/2011 financial year.

The announcement was made by Premier Cassel Mathale in his State of the Province Address on Thursday at the Lebowakgomo Legislature.

"As a measure of responding to this challenge, we have planned to provide 1 078 743 households with water in this financial year," he said.

Mathale said during his term in office, the provision of basic services which ensures access to water, sanitation, and electricity cannot be compromised.

During the 2009/10 financial year, the provincial government managed to provide water and electricity to 1 032 102 households while 621 749 households received sanitation facilities.

Mathale said the focus to provide clean water will be on areas identified in distress such as Giyani where they will be constructing a water pipeline from Nandoni, outside Thohoyandou, to Giyani.

Service delivery task team for Dipaleseng

Pretoria - A task team is to be established in Dipaleseng Local Municipality in Mpumalanga to look at challenges faced by the community and continuously monitor progress made.

This decision was taken after a delegation including Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sicelo Shiceka visited the area on Thursday following the recent service delivery protests in Balfour.

The team will immediately convene all national and provincial departments affected by the issues raised by the community.

Minister Shiceka has given the team, which comprises of government officials and community leaders, two months to report back.

He stressed that government will be paying special attention to all those involved in corruption as this was largely to blame for lack of service delivery.

"We will make sure that we do not fail the people of Dipaleseng. Officials who are not prepared to work for the people must change their attitudes or they must ship out.

"We will remove all obstacles that seek to hinder our progress on turning around this municipality. There must be no shifting of goal posts" said Shiceka.
