Johannesburg - Construction work to upgrade the latest edition to Johannesburg's skyline, Orlando Stadium, has been completed.

The stadium situation in Soweto is to be used as a training venue for nearby flagship stadium, Soccer City during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Acting Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, said on Wednesday: "I am excited to inform you that the City [of Johannesburg] has completed the rebuilding of Orlando Stadium that will be used as one of the training venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup."

Nelspruit - The Mbombela stadium in Nelspruit, which is to host some of the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches, is more than half-way complete and is expected to be given over to FIFA ahead of schedule next year.

Mpumalanga Culture, Sports and Recreations MEC Dinah Pule said the stadium was over 60 percent complete and would be ready in June next year.

She said the stadium was ahead of schedule despite repeated strikes over wage disagreements.

The building of the stadium with one tartan track and lawn took 24 months and has a capacity for 2000 spectators.
